My Thoughts  

So I admit to being a little behind on my reading.  Unfortunately, I am dealing with some medical things that require extra appointments, time and energy, so I have not been reading as much as I would like.  That being said I am about 2/3 finished and can tell you that this book touches my heart and makes me smile. It has also already brought tears to my eyes.  I appreciate the tender way that the author touches on mental health issues, such as shame and self-harm (trigger warning).   There is an element of mystery, what really happened and what will happen. The side story from the journal that Laney is reading adds an interesting historical element that parallels and propels character growth. I am anxious but hopeful about what comes next. I will try to update this when I finish it in the next day or two.   

Update

I am finished and completely satisfied with how everything came together. No spoilers, but everything was resolved nicely, with multiple characters undergoing great change.  So many deep topics were dealt within this book: trauma and PTSD, self-harm, family dynamics, and restored relationships. I loved the historical connection, the focus on mother-daughter relationships, and the importance of friendship and support highlighted by the characters and their journeys. I would definitely recommend this book.

About the Author 

Heidi Chiavaroli (pronounced shev-uh-roli...sort of like Chevrolet and ravioli mushed together!) wrote her first story in third grade, titled I'd Cross the Desert for Milk. It wasn't until years later that she revisited writing, using her two small boys' nap times to pursue what she thought at the time was a foolish dream. Despite a long road to publication, she hasn't stopped writing since! Heidi writes women's fiction, combining her love of history and literature to write both split time stories and contemporary fiction. Her debut novel, Freedom's Ring, was a Carol Award winner and a Christy Award finalist, a Romantic Times Top Pick and a Booklist Top Ten Romance Debut. Her second Carol Award-winning novel, The Orchard House, is inspired by the lesser-known events in Louisa May Alcott's life and led her to write The Orchard House Bed and Breakfast series, a contemporary twist on Little Women. Heidi makes her home in Massachusetts with her husband, two sons, and Wyatt, her standard poodle.
